Learning Objectives for the First Grading Period

The following objectives were selected from the Des Moines Public Schools curriculum documents.  The goal of the fourth grade teacher's is that students will display mastery of the following objectives at the end of the first six weeks of school.  

Reading Objectives

  1. Students will be able to pick a just right book.
  2. Students will be able to identify elements of fiction and non-fiction text.
  3. Students will be able to summarize what they’ve read in fiction and non-fiction.
  4. Students will be able to identify story structure components of fiction text.
  5. Students will be able to differentiate between predictions and inferences and apply them while reading.
  6. Students will be able to note in important details of fiction and non-fiction.
  7. Students will attain to punctuation while reading.

Language Arts Objectives

  1. Students will be able to appropriately use capitalization and punctuation in their writing.
  2. Students will be able to identify and use homophones.
  3. Students will be able to identify, know the meaning of, and use suffixes correctly; er, est, ly, y
  4. Students will be able to identify, know the meaning of, and use the root words tele and rupt.
  5. Students will be able to recall and use tier two vocabulary words.
  6. Students will be able to identify nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs.
  7. Students will be able to write complete sentences (including subjects and predicates)
  8. Students will be able to identify paragraphs.
  9. Students will be able to write a complete paragraph.

 Math Objectives

  1. Students will be able to use physical objects, pictures, words, or number sentences to demonstrate an understanding of multiplication and division concepts.
  2. Students will be able to use and understand a numerical line and hundred chart.
  3. Students will utilize strategies to solve multiplication and division problems.
  4. Students will utilize efficient strategies to solve multiplication and division problems.
  5. Students will be able to demonstrate mathematical reasoning to solve for the unknown quantity in multiplication and division situations, and justify the solution.

Science Objectives

  1. Students will be able to make a hypothesis based on information they have gathered.
  2. Students will be able to conduct and experiment and record important data.
  3. Students will be able to summarize and share their scientific findings.
  4. Students will revisit/revise their hypothesis after conducting experiments and synthesizing data.
  5. Students will be able to correctly identify all components of the scientific process.
  6. Students will be able to understand and use scientific vocabulary.

 Social Studies Objectives

  1. Students will be able to define economy; and recognize and understand goods and services, industry, and natural resources are attributes of the economy.
  2. Students will be able to define geography; and recognize and understand climate, regions (rural, urban, and suburban) are attributes of the geography.
  3. Students will be able to define history; and recognize and understand that the other attributes influence an area’s history.
  4. Students will be able to define culture; and recognize and understand that the other attributes influence an area’s culture.
